Rhett and Shannon Stubbs

Rhett and Shannon offer business owners a unique combination of advanced HR expertise that is coupled with solid and practical business management experience.

At the time of starting Active HR, Rhett Stubbs was entering his 25th year as a Human Resources practitioner having supported some of the largest Queensland based companies in managing workplace relations matters across all facets of the employee lifecycle as well as working in Industrial Relations and as a Strategic HR Business Partner helping shape and transform large business units.  

When asked about his reason for starting Active HR Rhett says:

“The reality is, HR if not managed well can become a costly churn of workplace issues, and I was watching small business owner friends get caught up in this churn, more like a game of “Whack a Mole” then HR resolution. What is more they were paying high cost providers for remotely provided HR advice and support that often missed the mark. It was apparent to Shan and I that small to medium business owners needed access to cost effective, affordable and professional HR support services and solutions that not only helped them resolve workplace issues, but also assisted in shaping their business to be “Great Places to Work” the ones that attract and retain great people and don’t tend to attract the negative issues.  Active HR was founded with that in mind and our team are passionate about helping lever the mechanics and dynamics of people and culture practices to develop workplaces that people want to be a part of.”

As a well-established local leader and member of Townsville’s small business community, the decision for Shannon to become part of the Active HR team was a personal one. Shannon understands the value of the bottom line to a business and having worked with small businesses in managing their HR systems and frameworks over many years Shan has seen first-hand the difference in result between a business that strives to be a great place to work and one that takes a reactive approach to HR. 

Shan explained her why as:

“I really believe in the Richard Branson philosophy of business….if you put your people first and focus on the experience of your employees, your customers will also have a great experience. I have come to appreciate the powerful impact experienced from an employee who loves what they do and the company they work for and I know there is so much return from this ethos for small to medium businesses. When Rhett decided to leave the corporate world and suggested we start Active HR together, he spoke about “Helping Shape Great Places to Work”. This is something I needed to be a part of.

One of the things I am passionate about is positive mental health and over the years I have seen many friends and family effected negatively by their work, with workplace induced burnout and anxiety being a sign of times. I don’t think it needs to be. The holistic approach we take at Active HR is designed to help those leaders who want to make their business a great place to work, one that has a positive impact on the lives of their team. After all people spend most of adult life at work and it needs to be positive experience”.
